A New Look for Country Kitchen

If you came to Taste of the Season last December and happened to stop by Country Kitchen for a bite to eat, you may have noticed that the restaurant had a new look to it. Known for its southern style comfort food and country atmosphere, Country Kitchen is the restaurant where guests can indulge in good ole fashioned home cookin’ and now enjoy new décor to go along with the country theming.

Starting last year during the off-season and continuing during the shutdown, our Creative Services team was hard at work to transform the Country Kitchen and give it a new look unique to its theme. Originally called The White Horse Inn, the new design for Country Kitchen is a modern take on a farmhouse style look while also playing homage to the original restaurant from when the park first opened in 1975.

“When I start any project for the park, whether it be a restaurant or shop makeover, entertainment stage design, or holiday décor, I always go back to our roots. I have a 1975 Kings Dominion park map hanging in my office that I reference frequently," said Tony Turner, Operations Supervisor Entertainment Creative Services.

“The {original} name of the Country Kitchen was The White Horse Inn, so I knew right away that I wanted to take some inspiration from that. I wanted to merge the “Old Virginia” look with a more modern adaptation of the current farmhouse design craze,” said Turner.

To help with the new modern look, a shiplap style wall treatment was first applied and painted white as a tribute to original name and exterior color of the restaurant. Plus, the light green boards along the walls were repainted black and the original light fixtures were replaced.

When you first walk into Country Kitchen, you’ll first notice a handmade china cabinet that has been inside the restaurant since the very beginning.

A new feature you will also see is a large faux fireplace to help set the scene. Designed and built by Turner, the fireplace and hearth were created to enhance the theming and anchor the space so you will feel like you are actually in Old Virginia when you come into the restaurant.

Along the top wall where the menu board is displayed, there is a collection of white antique and contemporary Ironstone dinner wear including serving platters, plates, pitchers and tureens.

In the downstairs seating area, displays of wall art hang on the walls to look like old advertisements for farmers markets, feed and seed stores and chicken farms unique to Virginia, all designed by Turner.

Plus, there are also numerous new and original décor pieces that are displayed across the wall in the upstairs seating area that contributes to the farmhouse and country theming.

Along with new décor, Country Kitchen is also getting a new menu update with new items including brisket, pulled pork, and smoked half chicken so be sure to follow along on our #FoodieFridays series for more details. Plus, we have more exciting menu updates for other dining locations heading your way soon so stay tuned!
