Tony Johnson, vice president and general manager at Kings Dominion, today announced that he will retire on January 3, 2021, after a nearly 50-year career at the park and with its corporate parent, Cedar Fair Entertainment Company. Under Tony's leadership, Kings Dominion experienced a number of positive changes including the launch of its first hybrid roller coaster Twisted Timbers, its first immersive holiday entertainment experience WinterFest, and family festivals such as Grand Carnivale.
Tony began his career at Kings Dominion in 1974 working summers in the park’s Lion Country Safari area; during the school year, he was best known as a beloved teacher, coach, and athletic director in Hanover County Schools. Then, in 1984, he joined Kings Dominion’s management team full time, and in 1992 was promoted to vice president of operations. He accepted increasingly responsible positions at other Cedar Fair parks including California’s Great America in Santa Clara and Carowinds in Charlotte and became corporate vice president of operations for all of Cedar Fair in 2012. During this time he was instrumental in promoting best practices in safety throughout the company’s properties. He returned to Kings Dominion in 2018 as vice president and general manager.
“I have been fortunate to have worked with so many wonderful people while at Kings Dominion, with Cedar Fair and throughout the industry while helping bring smiles to so many guests,” Tony said. “Our industry is unlike any other because we bring high technology and old fashioned hospitality together to create lasting memories for both our guests and associates. I look forward to returning to the park as a guest and seeing what terrific new things they have in store.”
Though he will be missed by the Kings Dominion family, we know you will join us in wishing him a well-earned retirement with his wife, Jackie, daughters Jennifer, Carrie, and Katherine and his 6 grandchildren.
We hope to see you and your family on the midways, Tony!
