A Day in the Life at Kings Dominion: Human Resources Edition

Think about the application processes you’ve been through when applying for a new job. Does anyone stand out as being helpful or enthusiastic? Here at Kings Dominion, our Human Resources department does its best to not only guide you through the application and hiring process, but to also continue making working here AMAZING through fun initiatives throughout the park.

If you’ve been hired at the park within the past year, you more than likely have met Human Resources Recruiter and Orientation Leader, Mikie Williams. In between her busy schedule, we were able to connect with Mikie and get some inside knowledge on what goes on behind the scenes of our Human Resources department at Kings Dominion and what a typical day looks like for her. Get to know Mikie and what brought her to Kings Dominion (and back!) below.

How long have you been working in Human Resources at Kings Dominion?

I started back in September of 2018, so I have been here for two seasons.

What got you interested in working in Human Resources?

My whole life I have always wanted to work in a job that helped people. In any business, when people have a problem with something or a question about anything, the first place they go is HR!

How did you find your position with Kings Dominion?

My mom was actually the person who inspired me to work at KD! I am a recent graduate of the University of Mary Washington (2018) where I studied Business Administration and I was trying to find a job in my field. She saw that KD was hiring for HR assistants and encouraged me to look at the site and apply. I had my interview with Anji and the rest was history! I began my start as an HR Assistant and then came back the next season as an HR Recruiter and Orientation Leader.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the people here. I have made so many amazing connections with the people I work with as well as others from different departments. I also love seeing the faces that come through orientations and interviews. One of my favorite things in the world is seeing someone go through our orientations, watching them grow and learn, and later hearing that they got promoted to supervisors and area managers!

Favorite memory on the job?

My favorite memory on the job would have to be teaching my very first orientation back during the Winterfest season. I remember being so nervous, and I am normally the person that doesn’t get nervous about public speaking, but at this particular moment I felt butterflies in my stomach. What made me relax and loosen up a little more was the associates I was teaching. They brought great energy and made teaching by myself for the first time ever so much easier. Like I said before, what I enjoy the most about my job would be helping and teaching new associates. They are the ones that make orientations and interviews so exciting and fun!

How much training went into your position here at Kings Dominion?

Quite a bit of training went into my position here at KD. Starting first at the front desk in HR helped a lot because it got me used to the programs that we use in the office. My background in softball and coaching really helped me as well. Being a catcher for UMW helped me with being confident and vocal since it is a catcher’s duty to communicate with an entire field. Being a coach also helped with leading large groups since I would have to coach about 14 girls at a time. My training for recruiting seemed like a lot, but I had the guidance of Kiandra, Christian, and Anji to help me. Through my background and the help of the recruiting team, I now know everything from to facilitating and assessing interviews to conducting orientations containing 30 to 45 associates. It was definitely quite a bit of training, but it helped a lot that I had the recruiting team in my corner whenever I needed help.

What is your long-term career plan and how has your job at Kings Dominion helped with that?

I grew up in a law-enforcement family so I would love to do something in that field to carry on the family tradition. The best thing about working at KD is how much experience you gain in such a short amount of time. Kings Dominion really helped me put “tools in my tool belt” that I can take and apply to any job. I am excited to say that I have been given more opportunities and experiences than I could have ever imagined in my first year on the job. That is all thanks to KD HR.  

Daily Schedule:

Every day is a little different with different tasks each day, but I will give you a look into what my Saturdays look like!

6:00 AM- Wake up, make coffee

7:15 AM- Leave for work

7:50 AM- Arrive at Kings Dominion

8:00 AM- Clock in for work, set up the orientation room and check emails.

8:15 AM- Contact new applicants

8:20 AM- Check in new hires for orientation

8:30 AM- Begin orientation

12:30 PM- Wrap up orientation with a game and send them off to department training, check emails and respond to emails.

2:00 PM- Have lunch with Kiandra and prepare for security interviews

3:00 PM- Conduct security interviews

3:30 - 5:00 PM- Contact new applicants for next week, respond to emails, voicemails, requests and perform other duties as assigned. After I get off, I love to come home and spend time with my family.
