Holiday Decor Ideas

Kings Dominion |
December 2, 2023

With the holiday season in full swing, there will be holiday decorations everywhere you go. From seeing Christmas lights on houses as you drive down the street, Christmas trees decorated with different kinds of ornaments, to the little details of candles, wreaths, and centerpieces, there are so many fun ways to decorate for the holidays. Whether you’re an experienced decorator or just starting out, we have some tips that can help make holiday decorating a little easier and much more fun with some help from our Creative Services Team.

Inspect the Lights

Whether it’s the lights on your tree, wreaths, or garlands, check and make sure the lights work and are placed where you would like them to make the most out of your décor. Checking to make sure the lights work and are placed first helps with the placement of ornaments and bows.

Use of Red Ornaments

One simple way to add festivity to your home is incorporating red ornaments anywhere that needs a little holiday cheer. “Shiny red ornaments are the most popular because you can put them in trees, wreaths, garlands, as well as bows. You can put them in a big bowl, add a little holly, and then you’ve got a festive centerpiece,” says Dean Carter, a member of our Kings Dominion Creative Services Team.

Adding Ribbon

Ribbon can help add a little sparkle to just about any decoration you can think of between the different colors and patterns to choose from. With the many different kinds of ribbon available, there are pieces that can fit any theme you would like that is sure to enhance any decoration piece.

Incorporating Vintage

A personal favorite style for Tony Turner, our Operations Supervisor for Creative Services, is mixing in vintage Christmas decorations with the modern pieces, which you can see in some areas of the park such as Tinsel Town and Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen. Incorporating vintage pieces with modern pieces is a great way to stay up to date with the latest décor trends while also bringing back a feeling of nostalgia.

Decorations with Meaning

Another way to add meaning to your own holiday décor is bringing out decorations and ornaments that add a lot of value, whether it’s a favorite decoration or ornament from your childhood or something that a family member has passed down to you.

Focus on the Main Pieces

For anyone who is just beginning with holiday décor and might not know where to start, Turner suggests focusing on your Christmas tree and other key areas in your home, such as your front porch. “Focus on the tree because your tree and your home are the highlights. It’s like the centerpiece of your house. I would make sure there’s something cheery at your front door to welcome guests whether it be a wreath or a garland.”

Have Fun!

Of course, the most important tip when it comes to decorating is to have fun with it! Enjoy every second while decorating and don’t let it stress you out. It’s supposed to be enjoyable and light-hearted, so have fun and enjoy making memories throughout the process!
